Did you ever just fall in love . . . with a piece of well-designed technology? I sure fell for this one. How lovely to have something else take care of one of my least favorite chores!

Why I love this gizmo:

(1) Goes about cleaning the floors quietly (forget the noise of a conventional vacuum cleaner);

(2) Does a better job than I ever could because it can get under the beds fully to get out all the nasty little dust bunnies, and it crawls along the baseboard to pick up the bits that hide on the edges of the room;

(3) Cleans for a predetermined amount of time, and then puts itself to bed (while it recharges itself);

(4) Can be scheduled to run whenever you choose; and,

(5) Does a great job of picking up cat hair (my old vacuum did not).

Problems?

Yes, but mostly they were just getting used to its operation. I had to learn to pick up throw rugs and clear the area of cords. I had to learn the robot’s eccentricities and plan for them.

I also discovered that a cat landing on the Roomba in the middle of the night would start it going - so we woke up to clean floors.

Worth it?

The iRobot 530 Roomba was the first in the series that fixed the major bugs in the whole line. The iRobot 530 has more power, better navigation and seems to have better battery life than all previous models. Though not quite as good as it’s big brother the 560 it is still an amazing unit and will give you a savings of about $40 bucks! Though this Robotic Floorvac is a better price than the 560 it has a few more navigation problems that generally don’t amount to much but still earned it to the number 2 spot. I bought this vacuum when it first came out and I could not believe how good of a job it did. When I bought this vacuum I only vacuumed myself once a month. This intelligent floorvac is definitely a great unit and earned the #2 spot!

The iRobot Roomba 400 has earned spot number 3 on our list. While being significantly cheaper than the 500 series it still offers powerful automatic vacuuming. The 500 series has several fixed bugs that the 400 series has, but the navigation bugs aren’t too hard to deal with. This model is a great way to get a good bargain on an excellent machine.

This one is a life saver!! This model doesn’t seem to vacuum carpet quite as well as the other three and is a little louder, but it does it’s job exceptionally well. My husband has this unit in his shop and it goes to town vacuuming up sawdust, little nails, ect… The unit has an add-on that allows it to hold more junk than any of the other robotic floorvacs as well. The unit is quite a bit cheaper than the others and handles concrete, carpet, wood floors, etc…Great vacuum for the dirty areas and to clean up after those messy pets.

Granted, I’ve had this thing for less than a week, but I can’t quit raving about it.

I got the Dirt Dog for my enclosed patio, which is home to 12 messy caged parakeets and is also, of course, where my 4 cats like to hang out. I chose the Dirt Dog over the Roomba because I thought the sweeper would work better on the unfinished concrete than a vacuum unit, and it was cheaper. I liked the idea of the larger crud-holder than the vacuum, and I thought maybe it would be less tempramental, too.

The first time I turned it on, it wandered around exploring—I quickly learned that the fringed cotton rugs would have to go (no biggie, they just trap dirt anyway). I didn’t move a lot of furniture—wanted to see how it would get along without much prep work on my part.

It quickly became my “Little Buddy” as it got stuck, or wrapped a string around its brushes and gently whimpered “Uh-Oh”. I responded like the silly thing was one of my kids: “What’s up, Little Buddy? Did you get caught on something?” Pathetic.

Anyway, he soon seemed to “learn” how to handle the edge of the platform my desk chair sits on and scoot under the shelves where the birds drop seeds & feathers. I learned to put barriers up so he couldn’t get into trouble on the indoor-outdoor carpet that trends to unravel. We trained each other.

He’s noisy…but I got used to it. The floor was looking better!

The cats seemed fascinated, but not afraid—they didn’t freak out, just watched and stayed out of the way. At one point one of them actually sat on the floor and watched while he worked all around her.

By the time he finished, I was thrilled with my utterly brilliant purchase. I pulled out the hepa DustBuster http://www.amazon.com/review/R3DJL18LOJDRWI/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm and sucked up what little was missed or out of his range. Walking on the floor in my bare feet, I could feel how clean it really was—as clean as it gets when I spend half a day working on it with the big Shop Vac!

Next test: The bachelor son’s house, equipped with three shedding dogs. Buddy whipped back and forth under two couches and a chair, scooping up fuzzballs like a champ. He cleaned the tile, the wood, and the (unfringed) area rug. He wanted to do the bedroom carpet, but I was afraid that might be just TOO much, even for him.

Buddy’s next challenge was our garage—smooth concrete, but VERY UNclean. This is what he’s built for, right? We set a timer and checked up on him about every 10 minutes to make sure he hadn’t gotten stuck somewhere or pulled something into his brushes that made him stop. It took him a while, and I could tell by his yellow light that he was getting really tired, but he got it CLEAN. I emptied out his “dustpan” about 5 times. Yesterday I did some spray-painting in the garage, and the whole newly-clean floor was soon covered with overspray. So I put Buddy back to work. He swept up all the fine paint dust off the floor—no whining, no dust mask, no beer break. And now all that dust isn’t getting tracked into the house. I can hardly wait to turn him loose the next time there are tiny metal shavings all over the floor from some drill-press project…

TBD is how well he’ll last, but can you tell I’m pretty pleased with our newest family member?

Update June 23 2007:

It’s now been six months, and we’re on our second “Little Buddy”. After a few weeks, Buddy I began just wandering around in a circle; it turned out he had an incurable wheel issue. It IS annoying that IRobot won’t cover postage on a warranty return, but it was worth the hassle to get a new Little Buddy. The house just wasn’t the same without him…..

Buddy II seems to be an even better and more energetic unit than his late, lamented sibling. He has earned the weekly task of sweeping our outdoor concrete courtyard. He gets a little rambunctious launching himself at some of the potted plants from time to time, but he does a wonderful job of cleaning up dirt, dust and leaves. It still amazes me how much stuff he picks up from what appears to be a pretty clean surface.

Buddy II has also been called into service for the above-mentioned drill press project. The scene begins as I step barefoot into the garage. I return hissing, swearing and bleeding on the floor. As I head for the tweezer drawer, I snarl to my husband, “Get Buddy! You’ve been drilling metal again and haven’t cleaned up!” So Buddy has now succesfully taken on the role of marriage counselor.

He’s also been on a couple of sleepovers at friends’ houses, where he delighted his hostesses by cleaning their patios, decks and garages. One friend was so impressed she asked for her own Buddy as a birthday gift. He was apparently VERY well-behaved, even without parental supervision.

Buddy continues to work tirelessly, asking for nothing but a charged battery, a clean brush and an occasional (chaperoned) date with the air-compressor.

This Robotic Floorvac is a great entry level model.  It is one of the cheaper automatic vacuums you can buy and still gets the job done.  Though it is last on our list it still manages to beat out several other robotic vacuums and is still a good buy.  I would recommend the other four vacuums before this one, but if you don’t have much wiggle room on your finances this is still a great model.  Even if you have one of the more powerful, expensive robotic vacuums this one is cheap enough that it would make a great second unit.  This way you get the job done twice as quick.

I love my Roomba 410 to death.
This is one of the cheaper version, but it fits my particular situation. A small apartment, tile floor, uncluttered. Under those conditions, this thing works great. I run it once a day, and my floor is cleaner than it’s ever been. It can’t reach edges and so it leaves a tiny strip around edges, so every once in a while I run the fine-tipped suction tube of my old carpet cleaner around all the edges to get that.
The bottom line is that is now easy to have an apartment with clean floors. Put the Roomba down, it does its thing for an hour and quits, pick it up and clean it, put it back on the charger and you’re done. Cleaning requires a grand total of three minutes, so whereas I once vacuumed once a month, I now vacuum once a day.
And my floors are clean, and they STAY that way.
I have some extension cords down but it NEVER gets stuck on cords. It’ll drag the cords around but it has never gotten stuck. It’s amazing to watch this thing go into a tight spot, bounce around cleaning, and come right back out.(I’ve done some programming. The program in this thing has got to be VERY sophisticated.) It gets under beds, tables, and chest of drawers, no problem. I don’t have any rugs so can’t say anything about how it handles rugs.
I have two cats. This thing picks up cat hair by the ton. The cats get used to it in about a week.
Replacement batteries appear to be expensive, but I’ve already got a line on a place that reconditions batteries, and the present battery will probably last until the warranty expires.
For my small apartment (around 500 square feet) the seven-hour-to-charge battery is as effective as the three-hour-charge battery, because it can all gets done on one charge. Besides, as a chemist I’ve got a feeling the seven-hour battery is likely to last longer.
Initially, the first three or four days, expect this thing to pick up a ton of dirt. In fact, on first use I recommend stopping it halfway through the run and emptying it. With daily use, the normal load will drop to a little dirt and cat hair. Depending on traffic in the room(kids, you know.I have no kids.), of course.
I believe the next cheaper model does NOT have the dirt sensor. (The dirt sensor is a thing that detects it has hit a particularly dirty spot. When this happens, the Roomba will stop and pay particular attention to that spot. It’ll flash a little blue light in outraged indignation while it circles around cleaning that spot.) I recommend getting the dirt sensor (which my Roomba has). In my opinion, a Roomba is much more efficient when it can detect it has hit a dirty spot.
I already know I want one those Scooba thingies, too.

iRobot seems to always be short on replacement supplies and accessories. I recommend buying a replacement kit when you originally buy the vacuum that way you don’t even have to worry about it.
